Q What does the NDIS mean for me?

We understand that changes to the NDIS can feel overwhelming and confusing. Adjusting to a new system isn’t always easy—whether you have questions about your current services or are exploring support for the first time. The important thing to know is that the NDIS puts you in control. You decide the services and activities that suit your needs and how they’re delivered. It’s an empowering opportunity for people with disabilities, offering more choice and independence to live the life you want. The NDIS is a Federal Government program providing funding to support people with disabilities, their families, and careers. 4The NDIS empowers eligible participants with disabilities to access personalized support. Each participant has an NDIS plan outlining their goals and funded supports. The funding is allocated directly to individuals, allowing them to choose their services, providers, and how they receive support. For more details, visit ndis.gov.au.

Q What will NDIS fund?

The NDIS funds "reasonable and necessary" supports to meet your needs and achieve your goals. Your plan may include: Core funding: For daily living, community access, and support needs. Capital funding: For one-off purchases like equipment, technology, modifications, or Specialist Disability Accommodation. Capacity funding: For skill building, training, employment, health, wellbeing, and support coordination. The NDIS aims to help participants achieve greater independence, community involvement, employment, and improved wellbeing.

Q Who is eligible for the NDIS?

To access NDIS funding, you must meet the following eligibility criteria: Be under 65 years of age (55 for Indigenous Australians) when first accessing the scheme. Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected Special Category Visa holder (New Zealand). Have a permanent or significant disability impacting daily activities. Live in an area where the NDIS operates. Or meet early intervention criteria to prevent future functional impairment

Q Access request form

To determine your eligibility, visit the NDIS website and complete the My Access Checker Tool. If you meet the criteria, you can ask to become a participant by completing an access request form. You need to contact the NDIA on 1800 800 110 and ask for the access request form which will be mailed to you. In the access request form, you will be asked to provide information about your disability and how it impacts on your daily life. You will need to collect supporting evidence from health professionals and allied health personnel.
